High efficiency heat pumps have “smart heat” which keeps
    the air coming out of the ducts at 100 degrees or more.


Researchers at Pacific Gas & Electric Co. looked at the heat pumps in the households of 48 customers who complained about their heat pump.  Not one of the heat pumps was functioning properly. 

Among the reasons:

  • Leaky, poorly assembled, or badly designed duct work
  • Low air flow from the unit
  • Incorrect Freon levels or systems that leaked Freon
  • Thermostats improperly installed or used

Most of the homeowners had called a contractor more than once, but researchers found that service technicians were inadequately trained.  They often did slipshodwork, lacked up to date equipment & spent insufficient time diagnosing the problem.

ALL CUSTOMER COMPLAINTS ABOUT HEATPUMPS WERE RELATED TO IMPROPER INSTALLATION AND MAINTENANCE
